Interweaving theory and commentary with case studies, this book explores a multifaceted approach to workplace education that develops workers' skills and integrates learning, language, and cross-cultural issues into work, communication, and management practices. Chapter 1 explores the changing world of work and implications for workforce skill development needs. Chapter 2 examines trends emerging from national government policies, pressures on educators, and changing workplace education and training practices. Chapter 3 explores theoretical perspectives about language and learning that inform a holistic approach to workplace education. Chapter 4 proposes a multifaceted approach. Chapters 5-13 account for the partnerships between workplaces and teachers. The following topics are covered: (1) issues in researching workplace needs and setting the ground for a collaborative, responsive workplace program; (2) strategies for planning for success and integration of workplace language programs into mainstream activities; (3) issues related to defining competence and the standards development process; (4) collaborative development of vocational curriculum; (5) practical ways educators used the learning potential of everyday work to support, supplement, or replace formal learning arrangements; (6) strategies educators can use to develop trainers' communication and presentation skills; (7) ways educators can contribute to developing effective and fair assessment practices in the workplace; (8) working with teams; and (9) ways educators can contribute to improving customer relations.
