"Active Citizenship Today" (ACT) is a service learning program for the social studies. There are two things that make ACT different from other service learning programs: (1) the "learning" in service -- learning refers to traditional social studies content and skills (it is a civics model); and (2) ACT is built around a problem-solving framework. This guide is the result of 5 years of the ACT program and represents a synthesis of what participants have experienced in implementing ACT. The guide is built around the following questions: (1) "What Is ACT?"; (2) "Why Use ACT?"; (3) "What Does ACT Look Like?"; (4) "Where -- and How -- Do I Begin?"; (5) "How Do I Keep ACT Alive?"; (6) "How Do I Stir Up Interest?"; (7) "What Is the Role of the Community?"; (8) "The ACT Program Coordinator -- What's the Big Deal?"; (9) "How Do I Evaluate ACT?"; and (10) "What Resources Are Available?" (BT)
