Meaningful Science: Teachers Doing Inquiry + Teaching Science.
Kielborn, Terrie L., Ed.; Gilmer, Penny J., Ed.
This publication relates the experiences of seven K-8 teachers who participated in a science education doctoral cohort group during which each of the teachers engaged in a different real-world scientific research project. The idea was to immerse teachers in scientific research so that they could experience inquiry in science first-hand and become part of the culture and discourse of science through a contextual learning experience. The chapters in this book highlight how these experiences were empowering, gave the teachers confidence in themselves, and renewed the teachers' energy to teach science. The ways and methods through which teachers can immerse themselves in scientific research and the impact scientific research can have on students are also discussed. Chapters include: (1) "Teachers Learning Inquiry through Scientific Research" (Penny J. Gilmer); (2) "Teachers Can Be Scientists, Too!" (Jacqua L. Ballas and Terrie L. Kielborn); (3) "How a Crab's Sense of Smell Changes the Life of a Teacher" (Kathleen R. Foley); (4) "Investigating Fish Mortality: A Science Teacher's Learning Experience" (Lori Livingston Hahn); (5) "Ghost Shrimp and Fish Bring Real-World Experience to a Science Classroom" (Joseph Brock); (6) "Blossoming of Science Involvement through Algae Research" (Terrie L. Kielborn); (7) "Scientific Inquiry: A Journey for a Teacher and Students" (Yvette F. Greenspan); (8) "Learning and Growing as a Scientist and Science Educator" (Marcie L. Bosseler); and (9) "Forming Partnerships: How a Teacher Can Become Involved in Scientific Research" (Terrie L. Kielborn). (WRM)
