Working Parents Can Raise Smart Kids: The "Time-Starved" Parent's Guide to Helping Your Child Succeed in School.
Beaulieu, John E.; Granzin, Alex; Romaine, Deborah S.
Noting that parents are as important to children's success as teachers, this book suggests ways busy parents can support their children's learning. Chapter 1, "What's a Time-Starved Parent To Do?" discusses the demands on parents' free time, the child's role in learning, the parent's role in helping children learn, and the importance of parent participation. Chapter 2, "Ready to Learn," explores the importance of proper rest, nutrition, and physical activity. Chapter 3, "Building Positive Attitudes toward School," suggests ways to help children be receptive to school, including showing the child the importance of learning in the parents' lives. Chapter 4, "Furnishing Your Home for Learning," suggests using games to enhance learning and creating a home library. Chapter 5,"Opportunities To Learn: Making the Best Use of Available Time," suggests looking for natural opportunities to share learning experiences with children. Chapter 6, "Building 'Little Engines Who Can'," discusses ways to encourage children, including helping children become responsible and helping children overcome mistakes. Chapter 7, "Developing a Partnership with Your Child's School," discusses the importance of parent participation, including attending school functions. Chapter 8, "Homework," discusses the reasons for homework, the best time for homework, and how much help parents should give children. Chapter 9, "So You Want To Help Your Child with Schoolwork," discusses when and how to help children with schoolwork. Chapter 10, "Learning and Television," discusses setting viewing limits and making viewing interactive. Chapter 11, "When Your Child Has Problems," suggests ways to distinguish minor from major problems and various strategies to deal with problems. Chapter 12, "Finding More Time," talks about managing time, including tips to make meals less time-consuming and ways to spend less time on appointments and errands. Appendices list educational games and Web sites for children. The book concludes with a list of 71 recommended books. (LPP)
