The guide is designed to assist adult literacy and English-as-a-Second-Language staff developers, teachers, and administrators in using the World Wide Web as an instructional resource and to construct meaningful Web-based instructional activities and projects. It is divided into six sections. The first gives an overview of the varied capabilities of the Internet as an instructional tool, including an assessment of its strengths and weaknesses in the adult classroom. The second section looks at how to motivate staff, accommodate different learning styles, and make the most of limited computer resources. Section three provides basic information about the Internet and World Wide Web to help orient practitioners to this new instructional environment, including Internet history, important terminology, Web navigation and searching basics, and strategies for using search engines. Section four offers suggestions for sorting through the quantity of information and resources available online. The fifth section teaches a simple process for developing original Web-based lesson plans, presents some model lessons, and offers guidance in evaluating Web site content.
