This publication is designed to help Neighborhood Networks centers create programs that meet the goals of adult literacy learners. (The centers provide residents of federally assisted or insured properties with training in economic self-sufficiency.) Chapter 1 highlights the special characteristics of adult learners--the challenges they face and what motivates them to acquire and strengthen their basic skills. Chapter 2 explores how to get started and choose the best methods and tools for a center: identifying and assessing adult new readers; designing a work plan; finding the right tools; using methods that lead toward self-sufficiency; using technology to develop reading skills; and rewarding progress. Chapter 3 offers links to resources that can aid in setting up programs. It includes the following: resource lists; names of organizations; lists of conferences and professional development opportunities; curriculum, projects, and lesson plans; assessment tools; publications and books; educational software: information and publishers; and web sites.
