Time To Teach, Time To Learn: Changing the Pace of School.
Wood, Chip
This book looks at how to improve education by refocusing time on relationships among teachers, parents, students, and good ideas. It draws attention to the inappropriate pace of teaching and learning which decreases the quality of education and quality of life for students and teachers. There are 10 chapters in three sections. Section 1, "Foundations," includes (1) "Time to Learn," (2) "Time, Growth, and Learning," and (3) "Using Time Wisely." Section 2, "Observations," includes (4) "Floating on the Surface in Seventh Grade," (5) "On Your Mark, Get Set...Seven Years Old in First Grade," and (6) "Working to Be 'All There at Once.'" Section 3, "Transformations," includes (7) "Changing School Time," (8) "Changing the Structure of Time in Classrooms," (9) "Changing the Use of Time in Classrooms," and (10) "Time to Teach." An afterword presents "Heroes in the Classroom." The two appendixes offer a discussion of academic standards and examine a publication by the Northeast Foundation for Children entitled "The Responsive Classroom." (Contains approximately 82 references.) (SM)
