This booklet reports on the results of the 1998 Texas School Survey of Substance Use among Students: Grades 4-6. The statewide school survey monitors trends in substance use among public school students, identifies emerging problem areas, and serves as a basis of comparison for local school surveys which are conducted annually by various school districts throughout the state. The 1998 survey results were based on responses from 91,168 students from 66 participating school districts in the state. In addition to the prevalence of alcohol and drug use, this study addresses aspects of peer, parent, and school influences on substance use behaviors at a very early age when prevention and intervention is most effective. Chapter 1 is concerned with patterns of substance use and covers tobacco, alcohol, inhalants, and marijuana. Chapter 2 provides demographic correlates of substance use. Chapter 3 gives protective and risk factors related to substance use. Appendix A is the survey instrument; Appendix B contains 15 prevalence tables; Appendix C contains 5 additional tables; and Appendix D is a description and history of the survey and describes its limitations.
