"We're Making History." Summative Evaluation. Capitol Region Humanities Alliance Project.
Bruckerhoff, Charles; Bruckerhoff, Theresa
The Connecticut inter-district middle school curriculum implementation project of the Capitol Region Humanities Alliance (CRHA) is presented in this summative evaluation. The main purposes of the 1996-97 project initiative were: (1) to implement the social studies curriculum partnering activities between Hartford public middle schools and the area's suburban public middle schools; and (2) to increase students' achievement in social studies knowledge and skills and build their appreciation of studying history from a multi-cultural perspective. In general, the project realized success with the pursuit of its goals. The project's core ideas and curriculum materials were important and well-suited to state goals regarding the restructuring of middle school social studies education. Essential elements of the project expanded and deepened inter-community communication and partnerships by building strong ties between Hartford and its surrounding community. However some school administrators and teachers complained of little relationship between the project and their social studies curriculum, some materials were age inappropriate, and objectives were not sufficiently grounded in the state frameworks. The CRHA management and leadership were also criticized. It is recommended that the project continue, but it should adopt a more effective design for implementation and curriculum development. (MM)
