This final report of the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council's (ODDC) project on transportation presents an evaluation of the current transportation options available to Ohioans with disabilities and offers recommendations to improve these options. The first section provides an overview of the ODDC transportation project including its underlying principles (such as promoting community life and employment over segregated living and work options) and defines key terms such as "public transportation" and "paratransit." The second section describes the current situation in Ohio regarding: public transportation, agency transportation, Medicaid-funded transportation, recent state and local initiatives, recent federal initiatives, and advocacy and the user perspective. Four major recommendations are made: (1) the disability community needs to maintain an active involvement in transportation issues as a "hanger on"; (2) the ODDC should adhere to and promote its major principles in all Council literature and activities related to transportation; (3) the statewide transportation coordination task force should be formalized and expanded; and (4) the disability community should actively participate in shaping the Ohio workforce development legislation.
