Special Education: Common Questions--Common-Sense Answers.
Lovitt, Thomas C.
This booklet answers common questions about special education and students with disabilities. It was developed in light of the movement toward inclusion, through which more students with disabilities (and students with more serious disabilities) are being assigned to general education classes. The 28 questions and answers are grouped into five chapters that address: (1) prereferral/identification; (2) legal issues; (3) delivery models; (4) classroom accommodations and adaptations; and (5) persons, places, and resources. Each question and answer also identifies one or more suggested resources. Questions consider topics such as: the process of identifying a student who may have a disability, the types of disability, the incidence of disabilities, causes of disabilities, major federal laws protecting students with disabilities, the meaning of "least restrictive environment," advantages of cooperative teaching, curriculum modifications, classroom accommodations, grading students with disabilities, communicating with parents, relevant organizations and agencies, and 22 relevant journals and books.
