This supplement contains five unit summaries on service learning that were developed during the 1996 summer institutes conducted by the Social Science Education Consortium (SSEC) for teams of middle school teachers selected from the western United States. Each unit summary in the supplement has been developed to correspond in style to unit summaries provided in SSEC's publication, "Service Learning in the Middle School Curriculum: A Resource Book," which was developed from SSEC's National Science Foundation funded project on service learning. The units selected for this supplement represent a variety of topics areas and curriculum enhancements: (1) "ACHES (Adolescent and Community Health Education Squad)"; (2) "Earth Inc."; (3) "Student Action for the Environment (SAFE Project)"; (4) "Trash Bashers"; and (5) "Where's Waldport?" The supplement notes that the units include more language arts and mathematics involvement than the units in the original book. In addition, the supplement also presents other ideas linking language arts and service: (1) "Biographies"; (2) "Novels for Young People"; (3) "Poetry"; (4) "Reading to Younger Children"; (5) "Research Papers"; and (6) "Writing/Speaking." The supplement concludes with a list of current resources on service learning published since SSEC's original book was completed in 1996. (BT)
