This textbook provides information on the legal development of special education, the current legal requirements in providing a free appropriate public education to students with disabilities, and the procedures involved in obtaining legal information in law libraries and on the Internet. Specifically, the 16 chapters address: (1) sources of law and law and special education; (2) legal research; (3) legal research on the Internet; (4) the history of the law and children with disabilities; (5) the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act; (6) Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; (7) the Americans with Disabilities Act; (8) free appropriate public education; (9) the Individualized Education Program; (10) related services, litigation, third-party billing, and school district responsibilities; (11) identification, assessment, and evaluation; (12) least restrictive environment and placement decisions; (13) procedural safeguards; (14) remedies; (15) disciplining students with disabilities; and (16) student records, private schools, the establishment clause, and liability for student injury. An appendix includes relevant sections of the U.S. Constitution, a glossary of terms, and an index of court cases.
