Wired for Learning.
Lasarenko, Jane
This guide, intended for elementary and secondary teacher, explains how to teach with the latest Internet-based technologies. The guide offers variations and tips for adapting assignments to K-12 grade levels, as well as to a variety of disciplines such as English, social studies, math, and science. Organization of the guide is based on technologies, going from the simplest to the most complex. Technologies highlighted include: Internet basics; Telnet, Gopher, and text-only software; e-mail; listservs and USENET newsgroups; computer networks; chat technology; MOOs and MUDs; and the World Wide Web. Each chapter is divided into the following sections: a narrative that discusses the use of the technology in the classroom; a "how-to" section covering the software; an exercise section designed to help students master the technologies; and a project section that provides step-by-step instructions for starting and implementing major projects. The guide explores ways to implement cooperative learning strategies that aid learning, discovery, and problem solving; teach students to become collaborative authors on the Web; help students master a variety of computer technologies; and transform students into "active learners" with the latest distance-learning teaching methods. Appendixes include a glossary, directory of academic listservs and USENET groups, list of K-12 Web sites, and gallery of projects on the Web. (MES)
