Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges
This report presents results of a national survey of college president assessment policies and practices and describes a "typical" presidential assessment process constructed from the most frequent survey responses. Respondents included 1,348 presidents and 535 board chairs. The typical assessment process lasted about a month; information was contributed only by trustees; the president prepared a confidential self-assessment statement; the board chair (and sometimes others) held confidential meetings with him and prepared a confidential, written summary of the assessment; the president had an opportunity to comment on the final draft; an oral report on the review was presented to the entire governing board; and the board typically rated the president's performance as"outstanding." The survey included questions that addressed policies, guidelines, and practices; the role of the president; the president and the board; outcomes reported by presidents and board chairs; and assistance for future reviews. Each of the survey questions is analyzed with a table showing answers for both public and private institutions. Also provided is information on the survey methodology, including data collection and the survey population. (Contains 38 references.) (DB)
