Using recommendations and insights gained from the book, "How Schools Shortchange Girls," this volume assesses the progress made toward sexual equity since 1992. It examines new challenges in American education, such as the focus on educational standards, and explores areas of potential equity challenges in the 21st century. It confirms the fact that public schools are facilitating equitable treatment of boys and girls, although concerns remain. Chapter 1 surveys and compares girls' and boys' course-taking patterns, noting changes since 1992. Chapter 2 looks at assessments and outcomes--tests and grades--and examines unequal outcomes by gender. The link between educational equity and the movement toward high standards for all students is explored in chapter 3. This chapter also reviews the degree to which instructional resources such as textbooks, technology, teaching styles, and teacher training have been used, or not used, to advance equity in the classroom. Chapter 4 examines the factors that put students at academic risk, along with school efforts to lessen students' vulnerability to those risks. Chapter 5 moves outward from the classroom to consider the larger school context, whereas chapter 6 describes efforts to correct lopsided job-distribution patterns.
