An evaluation of the "Talking about Touching" personal safety (1996 editions) curricula for Preschool/Kindergarten and Grades 1-3 was conducted to determine the extent to which students retained information and effectively demonstrated the skills taught in the program and to gather feedback from practitioners using the program to guide the final revisions of the 1996 editions. Students participating in the evaluation were from eight urban, rural, and suburban elementary schools in Washington state. There were 48 preschool/kindergarten students, 22 first graders, 30 second graders, and 33 third graders. These students were taught by 10 classroom teachers and 2 school counselors. Student knowledge and teacher attitudes were assessed through interviews and surveys. The evaluation showed significant improvements in students' safety knowledge and skill after receiving the curriculum at all grades. Students were better able to indicate strategies to prevent and handle dangerous situations and potentially abusive situations. Students' perceived competence in using safety skills was initially high, and increased significantly only for kindergartners. Teachers found the program easy to implement, relevant, and effective.
