Finding and Using Educational Videos. A How-To-Do-It Manual for Librarians. How-To-Do-It Manuals for Librarians, Number 84.
Stein, Barbara; Treadway, Gary; Ingram, Lauralee
This manual is a resource for elementary and middle school educators who want to select and use videos in instruction. Designed to help educators maximize the instructional value of videos, the first section includes lesson-planning strategies, lesson plans, teaching techniques, and sources for recording educational videos from broadcast or cable television. The second section provides an annotated alphabetical listing of videos that meet the following selection criteria: (1) content relevant to most elementary or middle schools' curriculum; (2) favorably reviewed in a professional journal; (3) produced between 1989 and 1997; (4) content and presentation appropriate for instructional use; and (5) approved by librarians reviewing drafts of the videography. Each entry includes title, producer, series name, year of production, call number, length, list price, sources of reviews, suggested grade levels, key descriptive words, and a brief annotation. An index to videos cross-referenced by subject is provided in the third section. Appendices include: contact information for video distributors and producers; lists of titles of videos from three popular television series--"Reading Rainbow,""Wishbone," and "GhostWriter"; names and addresses of Cable in the Classroom programmers; and a form for evaluating instructional videos.
