Institutional Support for Overseas Students in Scotland.

This report presents results of a study concerning institutional support provided to overseas students studying at institutions of higher and further education in Scotland. The study examined three related sets of issues: (1) academic arrangements (information about programs, courses, induction, timetables, tutoring arrangements); (2) institutional infrastructure (staffing, welcome arrangements, special teaching facilities), and (3) ongoing support for overseas students (cultural awareness, pastoral care, and specific issues like housing). The study was based on materials collected from institutions and interviews with institutional staff and students. The overall conclusion was that Scotland's further and higher education institutions are generally doing a good job in providing for the needs of overseas students. Other findings indicated a good match between perceptions of staff and students of the issues; notable differences between larger and smaller institutions, with larger institutions attracting more overseas students and providing more formal support systems; notable differences between the needs of undergraduates and postgraduates; a problem with the timing of induction and orientation sessions; and the need to provide better advance information to students.
