Employment Practices in the Professions: Fresh Ideas from Inside and Outside the Academy. New Pathways: Faculty Career and Employment for the 21st Century Working Paper Series, Inquiry #13.
Trower, C. Ann
This paper, one in a series about the priorities of the professoriate, explores some creative employment practices which will stimulate campus discussions of faculty employment policies and practices in four areas: (1) alternative career paths, (2) workload and productivity, (3) peer review, and (4) academic freedom and employment security. In each of these four areas, the discussion covers examples outside the academy and inside the academy concludes with a summary and questions for discussion. Under the rubric of alternative career paths, examples are drawn from law and accounting firms, and the discussion ranges from problems associated with two-tiered systems to status differentials to recruiting, rigor, and productivity. In the area of workload and productivity, examples are drawn from medicine and law. Also noted are academe's concerns with adjusting faculty work and retirement incentives. The discussion of peer review draws analogies between post-partner and post-tenure reviews, citing examples from think tanks and law firms as outside-the-academy practices. The discussion of academic freedom and employment security again draws examples from law firms and think tanks as analogous situations. A number of the examples are highlighted by boxed case studies.
