The Promise of Group Therapy: How To Build a Vigorous Training and Organizational Base for Group Therapy in Managed Behavioral Healthcare.
Roller, Bill
The use of group therapy is expected to increase dramatically in the next decade. This volume explores the convergence of consumer demand for group treatment and corporate marketing of health care plans and how it will affect group therapy as a discipline. It shows how to put in place the key organizational elements that are needed to create and sustain a successful group therapy program. Information is provided on vital issues such as how to develop an internal system that promotes referrals to groups from across lines of professional disciplines, train gatekeeper personnel to identify potential group referrals, gain organizational support for all clinicians to facilitate group therapy sessions, and implement the time-tested cotherapy model. Practical advice is presented on training staff members to provide group therapy: how to form groups, select patients, develop long- and short-term goals for group members, and remain flexible within the structure of the group therapy process. Staffing issues of a model group therapy program are explored, and the responsibilities and roles of the members are defined. (EMK)
