Student Racial/Ethnic Diversity in the Oregon State System of Higher Education.
Oregon State System of Higher Education, Portland. Office of Academic Affairs.
This report presents fall 1996 data on enrollment distribution by racial/ethnic group in the Oregon State System of Higher Education (OSSHE). It finds that, in most categories, the OSSHE distribution is comparable to the distribution among public high school graduates and to the Oregon population overall. Exceptions include over-representation of Asian American students in OSSHE and a greater proportion of resident Hispanic/Latino first-time freshmen in fall 1996 than the proportion of Hispanic/Latino undergraduates overall. Approximately 75 percent of OSSHE students who entered as freshmen in fall 1995 were still enrolled in OSSHE in fall 1996. The retention rate for minority students overall was comparable to overall retention. Variations among individual racial/ethnic groups included higher than average retention for Asian Americans and nonresident aliens, and lower than average retention for Native American students. Six-year graduation rates were also higher for Asian Americans (55 percent) and lower for Native Americans (31 percent). Tables present detailed trend data for: (1) population and enrollment distributions by racial/ethnic group; (2) undergraduate and graduate enrollment by group since 1981; (3) undergraduate and graduate enrollment by group and institution; (4) trends in first-time freshmen by group and residency since 1981; (5) first-year retention rates for 1995 freshmen; and (6) six-year graduation rates by group and institution.
