This book provides specific suggestions for ways to make accommodations and modify leisure activities to enable and encourage the participation of individuals with learning disabilities. The following chapters include: (1) "An Introduction"; (2) "Learning Disabilities," which describes types of learning disabilities, guidelines in assessing learning disabilities, and perceptions of learning disabilities; (3) "Awareness," which discusses how persons with learning disabilities recognize their strengths and weaknesses, "why" self-awareness is important, and advocacy; (4) "Leisure," which describes the benefits of recreational activities, "how" learning disabilities can affect one's recreation participation, and steps for guiding the person with learning disabilities to involvement in recreation activities; (5) "Delivery of Recreation Programs to Persons with Learning Disabilities," which explores the creation of an inclusive community recreation environment and the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act; and (6) "Specific Accommodations and Modifications of Recreation Activities for Persons with Learning Disabilities," which furnishes specific suggestions for accommodations in sports and physical activities, passive activities, outdoor activities, hobbies, and social/community activities. The final chapter "Resources," supplies names and addresses of major organizations and agencies, commercial businesses, well-known publications, and widely-used visual media sources.
