Should portfolios replace the traditional report card or be used in conjunction with other evaluative methods? A study assessed the value of portfolios as an evaluation tool and the popularity of their use. Research supports the use of portfolios as a viable means of assessment, yet studies are inconclusive and do not support portfolios as a better alternative to other forms of assessment. This study was conducted in Randolph County, West Virginia, to determine the assessment methods that are utilized by the elementary teachers. The advantages and disadvantages of using portfolios in the evaluative process were revealed. Results from 69 elementary teacher surveys were utilized. The research results indicated that the majority of teachers prefer the traditional report card with letter grades rather than a portfolio approach to student evaluations. Findings suggest that a combination approach is being used by many Randolph County elementary teachers and conclude that portfolios should not replace the report card. To be most effective, portfolio evaluation should be combined with other assessment methods.
