Changing Problem Behavior Using Solution Parenting.
Schatz, Mona Struhsaker; Zimmerman, Toni Schindler; Watson, Catherine
Solution parenting is designed to provide both foster parents and caseworkers a new kind of parenting for difficult children and youth in placement. The specialized training program is for those who will teach solution parenting. Objectives for trainees include: (1) identify small, positive behavioral changes; (2) recognize and use pre-existing interpersonal strengths and resources of their own as well as those of their children or youth (a solution focused technique); and (3) identify problem-maintaining cycles and solution-maintaining cycles of behavior. A solution-focused parent (or caseworker) continually assesses the strengths of the child(ren) in the family and identifies their own strengths, recognizes challenges and behavioral problems in the child(ren)'s daily functioning and creates solutions using solution-focused techniques. Training segments include: (1) "A Focus on Solutions for Parenting"; (2) "Assumptions behind Solution Parenting"; (3) "Solution-Maintaining Cycles of Behavior"; (4) "Going for Small Changes"; (5) "If It Works, Don't Fix It"; and (6) "Creating Manageable Goals." Designed to accompany a one- or two-day training course, this manual may be used by both trainers and trainees. It contains detailed instructions for trainers, learning objectives, a glossary, charts and illustrations, resources and references, and an evaluation form. (EMK)
