This summary report presents data on the health services offered by the Detroit (Michigan) public schools. Data were collected through a survey developed by the school system, and a response was received from a staff member at each school in the district. It appears that a wide variety of health services are provided throughout the city school district. No one school reported offering all the services that were included in items presented, with the exception of one school where a long-standing health center operates. The combination of health services offered is unique to each school. Most health services are delivered at the elementary school level, while the high school level receives services with the lowest frequency. Recommendations are made based on survey results. Overall, it is recommended that health services be continued and extended. It is suggested that the entire student population receive some specific services, such as vision testing, at specific times, resulting in a more consistently administered health services program. Results also show that comprehensive health education is implemented inconsistently throughout the district. Structured implementation of comprehensive health education might result in a healthier, more knowledgeable student body. (Contains 36 tables.) (SLD)
