Dance as a Way of Knowing.
Zakkai, Jennifer Donohue
This book illustrates why and how movements and dance are powerful tools for learning and creativity in K-6 classrooms. Designed to be a workshop on paper, the book helps teachers build on what they already know about movement and implement techniques that tap into children's natural interest in moving. Chapter 1,"Moving To Learn," explains the workshop on paper and the benefits of movement and dance. Chapter 2, "What Is Movement and Dance?" discusses what dance is and looks at the movement and dance learning continuum. Chapter 3, "Getting into Action," explains how to guide natural movement experiences, how to make curriculum connections, and troubleshooting. Chapter 4, "Moving into Understanding," discusses how to get smarter about the body, the elements of dance, movement exploration, connections across the curriculum, and integrating more than one discipline. Chapter 5, "Moving into Exploration and Discovery," includes moving to a steady beat, shape, and pathways. Chapter 6, "How To Design Your Own Lessons," looks at selecting content and strategies, implementing the lesson, and integrating more than one discipline. Chapter 7, "Moving into Artistic Expression," focuses on looking at dance, connecting your community to the dance community, and making dances. The book includes instructions on how to develop dance activities and offers photographs of children engaged in movement and dance. (SM)
