Reflections on the Concept of Intelligence. Advances in Cognition and Educational Practice. Volume 4.
Kingma, Johannes, Ed.; Tomic, Welko, Ed.
This book contains papers that discuss the "g factor" (general intellectual capacity) in discerning intelligence and how to influence the development of intelligence. The g factor relates to the theory that individuals who do well on one mental ability test tend to do well on other mental ability tests due to an innate ability. Chapters include: (1) "Psychometric g and the Race Question" (Arthur R. Jensen), which summarizes research into differences between black and white performance on psychometric mental ability tests; (2) "Race and Sex Differences in Brain Size and Cognitive Ability" (J. Philippe Rushton and C. Davison Ankney); (3) "On the Comparative Generality of 'g'" (Charles Locurto); (4) "Infant Cognition and General Intelligence" (D. Wayne Mitchell and John Colombo); (5) "Intelligence: The New Look" (H. J. Eysenck); (6) "The Mental Speed Approach to the Assessment of Intelligence" (A.C. Neubauer); (7) "Intelligence, Personality and Information-Processing: An Adaptive Perspective" (Gerald Matthews); (8) "The Concept of 'Intelligence' within Neuropsychology: Comments and Reflections" (Maria Levander); (9) "Contextual and Personal Sources of Individual Differences in Intelligence: Empirical Results" (Rocio Fernandez-Ballesteros, Manuel de Juan-Espinosa, Roberto Colom and Maria Dolores Calero); and (10) "On the Boundaries of the Acceleration of the Development of Intelligence" (Johannes Kingma and Welko Tomic). (Each chapter contains references.) (CR)
