A Survey of Medical School Clinical Faculty To Determine Their Computer Use and Needs for Computer Skills Training.
Reznich, Christopher B.
This survey examined the level of interest and perceived computer competency of community-based clinical faculty (n=498) at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine (MSU/CHM). Findings included: (1) 60 percent of respondents used computers for academic/scholarly purposes and 43 percent of nonusers indicated they didn't know how to use them; (2) institutional support (access to computers and question-answering) was perceived as lower by nonusers than users; (3) both computer users and nonusers were most interested in learning to use software related to e-mail and Internet access; and (4) 59 percent of users reported a lack of confidence regarding troubleshooting computer problems. Conclusions and recommendations include: teaching a core set of computer skills that offered hands-on learner practice preceded by either a tutorial or a demonstration; identification of local experts willing to serve as learner consultants; improved access to computers and peripherals; and identification of funding sources to support a statewide faculty development initiative.
