Language, Literacy and Children with Special Needs.
Rogow, Sally M.
This book is intended to help primary grade teachers teach children with disabilities or other special needs to learn to read and write together with their peers. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of literacy. The first chapter discusses emergent literacy and highlights strategies to help children find meaning and relevance in print materials. The second chapter discusses the use of live storytelling, story retelling, puppet dramas, and creative story writing to help children develop their concept of story. The use of nonsense words and phrases to develop children's awareness of rhyme and sounds is explained next. The fourth chapter discusses how to help children organize and express ideas in writing and includes the use of computers with children who have problems with handwriting. The fifth chapter is on vocabulary development as a component of reading with fluency and understanding. Working with children who have severe speech and language problems is the topic of the sixth chapter, which describes the use of augmentative communication techniques and supplementary literacy programs. The final chapter discusses the resources available to help classroom teachers and outlines some principles to guide planning and assessment. The book concludes with a glossary of terms and a listing of additional readings and resources including computer software. (Contains approximately 100 references.) (DB)
