Understanding the Defiant Child. [Videotape and Program Manual].
Barkley, Russell A.
This videotape recording and accompanying program manual are intended to provide a review of current knowledge about defiance in children, a behavior pattern that research suggests may be increasing in prevalence and that is a known precursor to serious disorders such as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder. The manual provides additional information on the following topics: (1) degrees of noncompliance/defiance; (2) the prevalence of defiant behavior or ODD; (3) the importance of defiant behavior (due to high levels of family conflict, situational pervasiveness of defiance, destructive effects on family social ecology, the developmental persistence of defiant behavior, and defiance as a predictor of diverse negative developmental outcomes); (4) important aspects of the interactions of defiant children with their parents due to the behavior's purpose as a means of avoiding parental demands; and (5) causes of defiance in children (impaired child and family management practices, temperament of the child, temperament of the parents, and setting and stress events). An appendix includes a form for evaluating developmental and medical history and a rating scale for parents. A listing of national organizations providing parent training groups for ODD is attached.
