Educator's Guide to Workplace Simulations. School to Work.

This guide is intended to help educators understand, develop, and implement workplace simulations for students in grades K-12. The introduction examines the role of simulation in integrated school-to-work programs. Discussed first are the following aspects of the workplace simulations model on which the simulations are based: educational premises (learning standards and Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills, contextualized instruction, constructivist theory); principal characteristics (active student participation, essential business involvement, array of work experiences); and types of simulations (multi-district simulations and simulations confined to a district, school, or classroom). The next three sections explain the following: advantages of workplace simulations for schools, students, and teachers; considerations in designing workplace simulations (key components, action steps, appropriate schedules); and strategies for involving others in workplace simulations. Concluding the guide are plans for 23 sample simulations (14 for elementary schools, 4 for middle schools, and 5 for high schools). Each plan contains the following: grade level, learning standards addressed, related career major, description of the simulation, instructional goals, and names of the simulation's developer and a contact person. Appended are the following: simulation planning guide; standards checklists; and simulation layouts. The bibliography contains 33 references. (MN)
