Focusing on the Exploring Transfer (ET) program, in which community college students attend summer university classes, this report describes the history of the program, reviews its main components, and discusses strategies for replicating the model. The first section reviews the origins of ET, indicating that it was first implemented in 1985 by New York's Vassar College and LaGuardia Community College (New York) but has since been expanded to include seven community colleges. This section also reviews issues and challenges related to the development of the program; discusses program changes and enrollments since 1985; and examines transfer outcomes, indicating that of the 399 students who completed the program as of 1994, 64% (n=254) have actually transferred, almost three times the national transfer average of 23%. The next section discusses efforts to replicate the program at other institutions, reviewing two successful and three unsuccessful efforts and highlighting lessons from the experience. The final section reviews the benefits and risks of establishing an ET-based program for students, faculty, and the institution and reviews essential elements for program success, including appropriate faculty, collaboration between partner institutions, leadership from the top, adequate funding, the use of faculty teams, and suitable curriculum.
