Charting Missouri's Library Future: A Report to the People of Missouri.
Hines, Maria
The primary areas of concern challenging Missouri's libraries as they move from the 20th to 21st century can be divided into three major themes and two sub-themes: current library services and operations; technology and information access; and leadership and funding; and training; and operation. Librarians and library clients are concerned about the difficulties of transition for libraries: how to maintain library services traditionally and locally identified and expected--specific types of programming, books, and buildings--while addressing the evolving library world with the strong technology base of shared information or offsite document resources. This report presents the findings of a series of public forums conducted in the winter and spring of 1996 to explore the changes affecting libraries throughout the state. The purpose of the meetings was to determine how citizens and the library community view libraries, what they expect from their libraries in the future, and the desired funding decisions and allocations for available local, state, and federal funds. Federal library legislation and state implementation are discussed. Appendices include: description of methodology; overview of the Missouri Association of School Librarians (MASL) and Wolfner Forums; preliminary findings summary statement; summary of key findings; vote count results by question; and 1996 forum schedule, site locations, and local staff.
