Techniques for Teachers: A Guide for Nonnative Speakers of English.
Wennerstrom, Ann
The workbook, with accompanying videotapes, is a complete English language course developed as a core text for an international teaching assistant training course. It is also useful as an independent study guide for foreign teaching professionals in North America who wish to improve their classroom communication skills. By watching the videos, viewers see U.S. teachers in a university classroom, actively engaged in teaching. They hear the language associated with different aspects of teaching and, by doing the activities in the workbook, learn to analyze the language of the teachers and to practice and improve their own English skills. Materials are organized into four parts: lecturing; classroom interaction; office hours; and pronunciation. In the first two parts, each unit highlights a different aspect of classroom teaching. Units on lecturing address: introductions; transitions; restating and summarizing; giving definitions; giving examples; and graphs and diagrams. Units on classroom interaction concern: student questions (simple, difficult, inappropriate); brainstorming; problem solving; discussion; and putting students to work. Part three focuses on teachers in conference with students in their offices, solving various problems. Emphasis here is on communication skills in individual encounters. The fourth part offers instruction in pronouncing consonants and vowels. (MSE)
