This book for children (ages 8 to 14) and the accompanying teacher/parent guide present the story of a young girl (who happens to have a physical disability and uses a wheelchair), her friends, and their experiences at summer camp as they search for a favorite horse. Information on the disability is presented subtly and incidentally to encourage the reader to relate more personally and foster a deeper level of acceptance and inclusion. The guide offers extensive learning activities related to the book. Included are pre-reading activities, journal and writing activities, English language activities, suggestions for grouping in an inclusive and accessible learning environment, rules, cooperative learning lessons (covering horses and riding, poisonous plants, sculpture, origins of horses, and emotional expression in horses), and post-reading activities. Also included are charts to help the teacher adapt the environment and learning expectations to individual children with specific disabilities.
