Down the Aisle [and] Down the Aisle: Teacher and Parent Guide.
Benton, Hope
This book for children (ages 8 to 14) and accompanying teacher/parent guide presents the story of two sisters, one of whom has a physical disability, as they prepare to participate in a wedding. Information on the disability is deliberately presented subtly and incidentally to encourage the reader to relate more personally and foster a deeper level of acceptance and inclusion. The guide offers extensive learning activities related to the book. Included are: pre-reading activities, suggestions for the inclusive learning environment, journal and writing activities, English language development activities, cooperative learning group rules, cooperative learning lessons (covering the 50 states, music, ceremonies, and dance), and post-reading activities. Also included are charts to help the teacher adapt the environment and learning expectations to individual children with specific disabilities. Attached is a list of resources, including organizations, books, computer software, and World Wide Web sites. (DB)
