The School Leader in Action: Discovering the Golden Mean.
Cattanach, David L.
Public school leadership is a constant search for balances, between and among conflicting ideas and forces, to shape difficult choices. This book is about educational leadership and administration. Chapter 1 introduces concepts and principles of leadership, and chapter 2 offers guidelines to help in the job search process. The attitudes, behaviors, practices, and skills of effective school administrators are described in chapter 3. Strategies for dealing with the boards of education, legal issues, and the media are presented in chapters 4-6. Chapter 7 offers suggestions for recruiting, interviewing, and selecting teachers. What educational leaders can do to help teachers do their jobs is the subject of chapter 8. Collective bargaining and strategic and long-term planning in chapters 9 and 10. Appendices contain sample negotiated agreements, administrative correspondence, answers to chapter exercises, and a staffing plan. (Contains 75 references). (LMI)
