Measuring Up: A Guide To Developing Integrated Learning Programs for Vocational-Technical Students.
Roche, Ken; Cummings, Judy
This guide, which is intended for vocational teachers interested in integrating vocational and academic instruction, documents and discusses the processes involved in the development of the Academic Vocational Integration Project (AVIP) at Franklin County Technical School (FCTS), which is located in a rural Massachusetts county with a large special needs population. The introduction examines the need to integrate academic and vocational education and discusses the problem of curriculum integration from teachers' and students' viewpoints. The following are among the topics discussed in the guide's remaining three sections: integrating the curriculum and teaching strategies (developing integrated curricula, recognizing authentically integrated curricula, incorporating generalized learning into shop situations, developing learning and employability skills, clustering closely related shops for math and language classes, providing special needs help in ships, sharing teaching techniques, assessing and evaluating student progress, teaching in teams, training teachers, using computers); development, implementation, and effectiveness of the AVIP; and grant activities (outreach activities, developments within FCTS). Appendixes constituting approximately 50% of this document contain the following: basic technical skills shop survey; careers choices curriculum; shop math materials; unified carpentry-related curriculum; list of Massachusetts Vocational Curriculum Resource Center integration resources; and miscellaneous materials.
