Gender Issues.
Ilfeld, Ellen M., Ed.; Hanssen, Elizabeth, Ed.
Coordinators' Notebook: An International Resource for Early Childhood Development, n20 1997
This issue of "Coordinators' Notebook" focuses on gender issues in early childhood. The first article, "Both Halves of the Sky: Gender Socialization in the Early Years," focuses on the arguments that have led to an international call for increased participation of girls in education, an introduction to studies which map young children's experiences, and an overview of the Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) methodology which is a community assessment technique used to gather information. A summary of the findings from the six studies is presented, followed by a discussion of what might be done in the future to increase understanding of gender issues. The second article, "Gender Development and Culture--Excerpts from Studies in Six Countries," (Aicha Belarbi) examines the countries of Morocco, Bolivia, Mali, India, Indonesia, and Jamaica. The excerpts are taken from longer studies which present the experiences and findings from each country's gender socialization studies. The final section of this issue, "Network Notes," presents activities of the secretariat, information on the Save the Children program, UNESCO, High/Scope Foundation, Meetings, publications, videotapes, and the calendar.
