This report describes a practicum designed to integrate limited-English-speaking students into the mainstream school community. The setting was a private secondary school enrolling 18 students from Japan, Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan. The project had four components intended to guide students of English as a Second Language (ESL) toward fuller participation in the school community: a conversation partner program, in which ESL students were paired with native English-speaking students for a 20-minute conversation on a specific topic each week, with summarization of the conversation in a journal entry; a biweekly film discussion group that was half native English speaking and half ESL students; a required overnight stay at a native English-speaking student's home; and monthly special activities off campus. Important outcomes of the program included establishment of close friendships between active English-speaking students and ESL students, increased ESL students involved in extracurricular activities, and participation in American family life several times a year, providing a broader understanding of American culture.
