Evolution of Employment and Qualifications in Motor Vehicle Repairs in France. Analysis of the Purpose of Coordinating the Overall System, Individual Organizations and Local Situations. Contribution for the CIRETOQ Meeting Organized at CEREQ/Marseille by CEDEFOP (November 20-21, 1995).
Bieganski, Richard; Cadet, Jean-Paul
Considerations in analyzing and surveying the prospects for employment and training in the motor vehicle repair sector were explored by way of the example of France's motor vehicle repair sector. The discussion focused on the need to take the following steps: determine how labor is managed in the sector under consideration; consider the impact of changes in the sector's size and structure and the training and skill levels of its workers; trace trends regarding enterprise size and networks of enterprises; and identify specific regional features. A method of diagnosing employment opportunities and training needs was proposed that follows in the tradition of applied economics and is based on characterization of labor management as it is predominantly and structurally practiced in the sector and in the mutated forms that it may adopt in response to technical and economic changes. It was emphasized that achieving a good understanding of labor and qualification requirements in a sector requires taking a close look at situations in individual enterprises and local areas so as to allow for the wide range of different forms that the training-employment relationship assumes.
