Putting It Together. A Guide to Planning Units of Work in Adult Basic Education.
Western Sydney Inst. of TAFE, Blacktown (Australia).
This document is intended for teachers working with the core literacy and numeracy modules, constituting the Australian Technical and Further Education program, culminating in a Certification in Adult Foundation Education (CAFE). It contains 10 units of study supporting the literacy and numeracy needs of adult students working toward a CAFE. The introductory chapter discusses the following topics: principles of good practice in adult basic education; the four stages of the CAFE course of modules; the four parts of the CAFE methodology (plan, model, act, reflect); and the 15 intended learning outcomes of the CAFE core modules. The units are designed to help teachers help students develop as learners while also acquiring literacy and numeracy skills and achieving affective outcomes. Each unit of study contains some or all of the following: suggested unit content; possible approaches to conducting class sessions; models of effective practice for teachers to demonstrate; and suggestions for conducting class/group activities and reviewing and evaluating students, activities, and materials. The unit topics are as follows: finding out about holidays; running and maintaining a car; consumer interaction; introduction to the Anti-Discrimination Board; community action; population statistics; budgets; assertiveness; making a claim, and conflict resolution.
