Oklahoma Kids Count Factbook, 1995.
Oklahoma Inst. for Child Advocacy, Inc., Oklahoma City. Oklahoma Kids Count.
This Kids Count report details county and statewide trends in the well-being of Oklahoma's children. The statistical report is based on eight indicators of child well being: (1) percent low birthweight infants; (2) infant mortality rate; (3) births to unmarried teens; (4) child abuse and neglect rates; (5) child death rate; (6) children living in poverty; (7) high school dropout rate; and (8) juvenile violent crime. Chapter 1 of the report presents demographic trends over the past 10 years for Oklahoma's child population. Statewide and county demographic information presented includes children in rural and urban areas, racial background, and percent in single parent families. Chapters 2 through 9 present trends for each of the benchmarks. Each benchmark is defined, state and county trends are presented, racial differences are discussed if present, and some attempts to alleviate the problem are discussed. Results indicate that although there have been improvements since the mid-1980s in the infant mortality rate, child mortality rate, and high school dropout rate, there have been increases since the mid-1980s in low birthweight infants, births to unmarried teens, child abuse and neglect rate, children living in poverty, and juvenile violent crime. The report's final chapter presents methodology, sources, and acknowledgments, and describes the Kids Count Project. (KDFB)
