Flip It! An Information Skills Strategy for Student Researchers. Professional Growth Series.
Yucht, Alice H.
Students often approach research assignments with no real idea of how to proceed, even after having been taught the basic library/information skills and strategies. This book gives students the skills and conceptual framework to help them become successful, independent problem-solvers. The publication defines the four basic steps in tackling a research problem and builds a mnemonic around those concepts: Focus on the topic; Locate the appropriate resources; Investigate and implement the information found; and Produce the results of the findings for Intelligent Thinking. Examples and resource-based activities for implementing this strategy across the curriculum are provided. The book shows how to design effective information skills lessons and teach problem-solving skills not only for research activities but as generic, universal study skills as well. Appendices include: FLIP IT! posters, focus frames worksheet, pathfinder guide worksheet, worksheet for citations of resources used, note-taking worksheet, "Cite the Site" poster, library activity planning guide worksheet, "We're All Speaking the Same Language" problem solving worksheet, and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. (Contains 45 references.) (Author/SWC)
