Case Study Applications of Statistics in Institutional Research. Resources in Institutional Research, Number Ten.
Coughlin, Mary Ann; Pagano, Marian
This monograph covers the theory, application, and interpretation of both descriptive and inferential statistical techniques in institutional research. Each chapter opens with a hypothetical case study, which is used to illustrate the application of one or more statistical procedures to typical research questions. Chapter 2 covers the comparison of group means, including t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, factorial analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, multivariate analysis of variance, and nonparametric tests of mean differences. Chapter 3 covers correlation, and includes Pearson correlation coefficient, nonparametric correlations, and regression analysis. Chapter 4 covers chi-square: two-way chi square, one-way chi square, and chi-square automatic interaction detection. Chapter 5, which covers selection of the appropriate statistic, discusses and gives examples of design trees. The appendix lists the statistical commands in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences that are used to perform the analyses illustrated in the text. (Contains 15 references.) (CH)
