This handbook is designed to provide information to parents of gifted children in Alberta, Canada. The handbook outlines the mission and objectives of the Alberta Associations for Bright Children and describes the structure of the non-profit organization. The booklet then addresses: (1) the characteristics of gifted children; (2) the rights of children with special needs; (3) Alberta educational resources on statutory and regulatory requirements (describes current requirements for gifted education and Individualized Program Plans); (4) funding mechanisms for special education services to gifted children; (5) accountability for educational results (discusses provincial requirements for annual education results reports); (6) options for meeting the educational needs of gifted children; (7) recommendations for establishing and maintaining a positive relationship with a child's teacher; and (8) advocacy for gifted education. Most sections list print and organizational resources that parents can obtain or contact for more in-depth information, including Websites. The last section lists additional resource organizations for parents of gifted children in Alberta. (CR)
