Scatter Matters: A Middle-School Mathematics Unit Focusing on Scatterplots, Correlation, and Cause and Effect. EQUALS Investigations Units.
California Univ., Berkeley. Lawrence Hall of Science.
EQUALS is a teacher education program that helps educators acquire methods and materials to attract minority and female students to mathematics. The Investigations Units, of which this document is an example, provide ideas and materials for middle schools. This unit is primarily about displaying data using number-line plots and scatter plots and using these displays to learn about the data. Scatter plots show the relationship between sets of numbers. They are used to help decide how strongly two variables or characteristics are associated or correlated. By using data generated by and about the students the statistical techniques are anchored in a context that is meaningful to them. Students work in groups, pairs, individually, and as a class in this unit, which takes about 15 hours of class time. The sessions are: (1) data collection; (2) single-item data; (3) paired data, scatter plots, and making inferences; (4) the individual project; and (5) the end-of-unit assessment. Masters for transparencies and Spanish translations of selected student worksheets are attached. (Contains 16 figures and 28 references.) (SLD)
