America's "Spelling and Reading with Riggs": 70 "Orton" Phonogram Cards, with Handwriting Instructions.
Riggs Inst., Beaverton, OR.
This set of 70 cards accompanied by instructions on using the cards) can be used by any teacher, tutor, parent, aide, or literacy volunteer, individually or in classes and small groups, to teach the spelling, writing, and reading of nearly all English words to virtually any child (age 5 and up) or adult. The cards can be used for initial or remedial instruction. Classroom teachers will find the set of cards useful as a supplement to their basal or "whole language" programs, especially for students who read well but who want to improve their spelling and writing skills. Each of the 70 cards in the set represents one of the 70 common phonograms identified by the late Samuel T. Orton. The front of each card in the set presents the phonogram, and the back of the card offers instructions for the teacher, tutor, or parent. (RS)
