This report traces the development of the art program in the Des Moines (Iowa) Independent Community School District and provides an assessment of current practices and procedures in the system. Future plans are delineated for improvement of the art program. The paper is divided into seven sections: (1) mission; (2) context evaluation; (3) input evaluation; (4) process evaluation; (5) product evaluation; (6) future plans; and (7) appendices. The goals serving as fundamental guidelines include: (1) to develop knowledge and skills necessary to express ideas visually; (2) to develop awareness of the role of art in past and present cultures; (3) to develop an understanding of the visual world; (4) to develop skills for making informed aesthetic judgments; and (5) to develop an integration of the visual arts with other disciplines in the curriculum.
